I have been a big fan of Marques Toliver for over a year now, since I heard his collaboration with dance outfit Compuphonic, the brilliant track "Sunset". After supporting Paloma Faith on tour and a hugely successful EP, his debut album Land of Canaan is finally here. A soulful, upbeat record, this is a glorious first album for an artist that writes his own music and plays the violin (well). It is hard to describe what sort of artist he is, and comparisons with Frank Ocean have been common (both young, talented, black, soulful and gay). Marques Toliver is an artist that will grow and grow and it will be interesting to see how his music changes. Not only his music but his style - Toliver is one rakish gent.
