The most famous play in the world is back at the RSC in Stratford Upon Avon. David Farr directs a new and inventive new production of the play, which maintains the audiences interest for the three and and a half hours stage time. Hamlet is now played by Jonathan Slinger, who swings from poet to maniac in seconds and with gusto. It is a hard role to play and in places, there is a sense of purposefully underplaying the role, especially in key scenes that we will all be familiar with. The rest of the cast deliver particularly strong performances - Robin Soans is the faithful and rather annoying Polonius, and Ophelia, played by Pippa Nixon is new, young and fragile. Greg Hicks as Claudius is outstanding, with slicked back hair and double breasted suit. The staging was clever and worked well, and the fencing references were both modern and in keeping with the original text.
I would strongly recommend watching this while it is here - until 28th September.
